Signs of a sewer line problem

When more than one fixture is affected at once, suspect the main line. Several slow drains, gurgling when another fixture runs, the lowest drain in the house backing up, a smell outside, or a patch of ground that is damp or unusually green all point past a single blocked drain.

The signs, in rough order of seriousness

  • Sewage backing up into the lowest shower or floor drain
  • Two or more fixtures slow or backing up at the same time
  • A toilet that bubbles when the washer or the tub drains
  • A sewer smell inside, or outside near the line
  • Ground above the line that stays damp, sinks, or grows greener than everything around it

What to do while you wait

  1. 01

Stop putting water into the system. No laundry, no dishwasher, no long showers

  2. 02

Keep people out of the affected rooms if anything has come back up

  3. 03

Do not pour chemicals down it, because they sit in the standing water and reach nobody except whoever opens the line

  4. 04

Note when it happens, because a line that fails only under heavy use tells us something

Why the ground here matters

Valley soils move. Caliche layers, expansive clay and dry ground that shifts with irrigation all put slow, uneven load on a buried line. Over time that shows up as a sag holding water, a joint pulled slightly open, or a section with the slope gone out of it.

That is also why the same spot keeps catching: the pipe is no longer the shape it was laid in.

Answers

More on this

Is a bubbling toilet a sewer problem?

It can be. Bubbling means air is being pulled through water somewhere it should not be, which happens when a shared line is restricted or a vent is not doing its job.

Do I need a camera inspection?

When the same line keeps failing, or several fixtures are involved, looking is better than guessing. It answers where and why, which is what decides the repair.

Is this an emergency?

Sewage coming back into the house is a health matter and should not wait. Slow drains without a backup are urgent in the sense that they rarely improve on their own.
