Drains and sewer

Drain cleaning

A slow drain is a warning, not a nuisance. We clear the blockage properly, then find out why it happened, whether that is grease and soap build-up, hard-water scale, or something wrong in the line itself, so you're not calling again next month.

When to call

  • One fixture draining slowly, or gurgling when another runs
  • Water backing up into a tub or shower
  • A smell coming up from a drain
  • Several drains slowing at once, which usually points at the main line

What we do

  1. 01

Find where the blockage actually is before opening anything

  2. 02

Clear it at the source rather than pushing it downstream

  3. 03

Check the line runs properly afterwards

  4. 04

Tell you what caused it and what would stop it happening again

What decides the price

It follows the fixture, how far in the blockage sits, and whether the real problem turns out to be the line rather than the drain. You hear which one it is at the house. We give the estimate in person, once we’ve seen the job.

Drain cleaning: questions and answers

Why does the same drain keep clogging?

Either it's never been fully cleared, or the line itself has a problem: a belly, roots, or damage. Repeat clogs in the same place are worth looking at properly rather than clearing again.

Are store-bought drain chemicals a bad idea?

They're hard on older pipe and on the fittings, and they rarely clear a real blockage, they eat a channel through it. If you've used one, tell us, because it's still in the line when we open it.

What should never go down a disposal?

Grease and oil, coffee grounds, rice and pasta, fibrous vegetable peels, and bones. Grease is the one that quietly lines the pipe until nothing gets past.
