Water heater: repair or replace?
Repair it if the tank is sound and a part failed: a thermostat, an element, a thermocouple, a gas valve. Replace it if the tank body itself is leaking or rusting through, because no repair fixes a failed tank. In the Valley, hard water usually decides it sooner than age alone.

Repair is the better money when
- The leak is at a fitting, a valve or a connector, not the tank body
- The unit is young for its type and has been flushed
- One part failed and the rest tests fine
- The venting, the gas line and the connections are all sound
Replace it when
- Water is weeping from the body of the tank itself
- There is rust in the hot water, or rust running down the outside
- The tank rumbles hard and a flush brings back very little
- It has already had a second repair for a different fault
- The household outgrew it and you run out of hot water every evening
Why the Valley changes the math
Hard water leaves scale in the bottom of a tank. Scale insulates the burner from the water, so the heater works harder, the steel runs hotter, and the tank fails from the inside before the outside gives any warning.
That is why we look at the tank before we look at the parts. A cheap repair on a scaled tank buys months, not years, and we would rather say so at the house than after the invoice.
What we check before we say either word
| What we look at | What it tells us |
|---|---|
| Where the water is coming from | A fitting is a repair. The tank body is not. |
| Rust in the hot water | The lining is going, so the tank is on its way out. |
| How much a flush brings out | How far scale has taken the tank. |
| The anode rod, where we can reach it | How much protection the tank has left. |
| The gas or electric supply and the venting | Whether a new unit can go straight back in the same spot. |

Answers
Can a leaking water heater be repaired?
It depends where the leak is. A drip from a supply connector, a drain valve or the temperature and pressure valve is a repair. Water weeping from the seam or the base of the tank is the tank itself, and that is a replacement.
Will you try a repair first?
If a repair is honest, yes. We test the parts at the house and tell you what failed. If the tank is the problem, we say so rather than sell you a repair that lasts a season.
Do I have to decide the same day?
No. The estimate is given in person once we have seen the unit, and it is yours to think about.
