Questions · Water heaters

How long does a water heater last in hard water?

Less than the label promises. Hard water drops mineral scale in the bottom of a tank, the burner then has to heat through that layer, and the steel runs hot and fails early. A flushed, softened heater lasts far longer than a neglected one. Age plus scale is the honest measure, not the sticker date.

What scale actually does

Valley water carries a lot of dissolved mineral. Every time the heater warms it, some of that mineral drops out and settles. On a gas tank it forms a crust right where the burner heats. On an electric tank it packs around the lower element and buries it.

The heater still makes hot water, so nothing looks wrong. What changes is the temperature of the steel, and steel that runs hot corrodes faster. By the time the tank tells you, it is telling you with water on the floor.

The signs a tank is near the end

  • Rumbling, popping or a kettle sound when it heats
  • Hot water that runs out earlier than it used to
  • Rust color in the hot water when the house has been quiet
  • Damp or a rust trail on the outside of the tank
  • A flush that brings out very little, on a heater that has never been flushed

What actually buys you years

  • A softener, which takes the mineral out before it ever reaches the tank
  • Flushing, done regularly rather than once when it is already loud
  • An anode rod that gets checked instead of forgotten
  • A heater sized for the house, so it is not reheating all evening

More on this

Does a water softener make a water heater last longer?

It removes the mineral that forms scale, so there is less of it settling in the tank. It is the single biggest thing a Valley homeowner can do for a heater, and it helps every fixture in the house at the same time.

How often should I flush a water heater here?

More often than the label suggests, because Valley water is harder than the label assumes. If a flush comes out heavy with sediment, that is the heater telling you to do it again sooner.

My heater is quiet. Is it fine?

Quiet is good, but it is not proof. A tank that has never been flushed and never had a softener in front of it is worth looking at before it decides for you.
